The great power pole controversy
In about 1998 it was suddenly announced that a high voltage transmission line with huge ugly poles would be strung through the center of campus. From what we could tell, this decision was made by a small group of people with little input, but it was baffling. What were they thinking? The "plan" began to come unraveled when Keith Love, then the publisher of the Daily Record, made stopping the poles his cause. And he did. I'm not sure that President Nelson ever spoke to him again, but it was a great service for the community and the campus.
